Who We Are

Within the Kentucky State University Cooperative ExtensioSpacer Elementn Service, the Community Resource Development (CRD) team plays a vital role in advancing KSU’s mission at an 1890 Land-Grant Institution by empowering underserved communities through education, outreach, and capacity-building initiatives. CRD professionals work collaboratively with local leaders, organizations, and residents to identify and address critical community needs, fostering sustainable development and improving quality of life. By leveraging research, technical assistance, and training, CRD promotes economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship, aligning with the university's commitment to enhancing the well-being of diverse populations and strengthening community resilience.

The CRD team is comprised of strong, diverse individuals who bring both personal and professional subject matter expertise in the following priority areas:

Community Resilience & Well-Being

Empowering individuals and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from challenges while promoting overall health and wellness.

Disaster Education

Building community preparedness and resilience through research-based education on natural and man-made hazards including mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Programs

  • Hazard Webinar Series: Disaster education programming is provided virtually to both the public and extension agents in partnership with the KSU Disaster Educator. The webinar series explains what to do before, during, and after a variety of natural and man-made hazards.

  • CALKY Preparedness Workshops: In-person and virtual disaster education programming is provided in partnership with the Center for Accessible Living of Kentucky (CALKY), Norton Healthcare, the Louisville Department of Health, and the KSU State Specialist for Disaster Health and Wellness. The program explains what to do before, during, and after a variety of natural and man-made hazards.

Land Retention & Wealth Development

Providing education and technical assistance on heirs’ property, estate planning, land retention, and building generational wealth through asset management and business development.

Programs

  • Navigating Land Records: Learn to utilize electronic land records, identify heirs to clear title, monitor title fraud, and learn about delinquent tax sales. This program is open to community stakeholders, heirs' property owners, extension personnel or anyone that wants to address heirs' property issues.

Urban Community Development

Building individual and community capacity through education focused on financial readiness, safe job searching, and essential workplace skills to support long-term economic and career success.

Programs

  • Scam-Safe & Money-Ready: A workforce and financial literacy workshop designed to help individuals recognize and avoid common job, financial, and online scams. This workshop serves job seekers, workforce participants, and community members who may be vulnerable to fraud or financial instability. Participants learn how to identify red flags in job postings, emails, texts, and financial offers while gaining practical strategies for protecting personal information and income. The workshop also covers reporting fraud, preparing for unexpected financial emergencies, and building confidence in making safer financial decisions. Open to all age groups and can be conducted virtually or in person. Stand alone or combined with Smart Job Searching in the Age of AI and Scams as part of a program series.
  • Smart Job Searching in the Age of AI and Scams: A career readiness workshop that equips participants with the skills needed to navigate today’s technology-driven job market safely and effectively. The workshop serves job seekers of all experience levels, particularly individuals re-entering the workforce or seeking guidance with modern hiring practices. Participants explore reputable job search platforms, learn how to identify and avoid employment scams, and gain insight into how employers use artificial intelligence during recruitment and hiring. The workshop also introduces responsible ways to use AI tools to strengthen resumes, applications, and job search strategies. Open to all age groups and can be conducted virtually or in person. Stand alone or combined with Scam-Safe & Money-Ready as part of a program series.
  • Personal Finance & Financial Decision-Making Workshops: Educational sessions focused on helping individuals build practical money management skills and long-term financial confidence. These workshops serve individuals and families seeking to improve their financial literacy and make informed financial choices in everyday life. Participants engage in discussions and activities related to budgeting, saving, understanding credit, and managing financial responsibilities. The workshops provide accessible, real-world guidance that supports financial stability, goal setting, and stronger financial decision-making habits.

Urban Growers Program (Louisville): The Urban Growers Program is a hands-on training and support initiative that helps aspiring and beginning growers build skills in sustainable food production, business development, and local market access. Through workshops, mentorship, and real-world learning experiences, participants gain the knowledge and resources needed to grow, sell, and share food within their communities. The program also fosters a strong network of growers working together to strengthen local food systems and improve food access.

Controlled Environment Agriculture

Providing education and technical assistance in controlled environment agriculture, including hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics, and greenhouse and high-tunnel systems.

  • Freight Farms at the Benson Farm: This program offers workshops, demonstrations, and technical assistance in soilless systems to students, urban growers, and extension professionals, strengthening technical capacity in modern agricultural systems.
  • Grow CEA Initiative: This program offers workshops, demonstrations, and technical assistance in soilless systems to students, urban growers, and extension professionals, strengthening technical capacity in modern agricultural systems.
